Back-up Strategies

When you are using Monsoon Marketplace, your data is your business. It is important to periodically back-up your data, in the event that you need to recover it, and to save a copy of the backups offsite.

Overview

When you back-up your Monsoon Marketplace data, you create a copy of the inventory information that you use to run your business. This data belongs to you and is kept on your computers.

Important: Monsoon does not have a back-up copy of your data. While some information is transmitted to Monsoon, this data is only used for billing, support and performance analysis.

All of the inventory and pricing data that Monsoon Marketplace uses is kept in a database that is located by default on the same computer as your primary server. All communication with your online markets takes place locally, from the computers that you work on.

Your Monsoon Marketplace database can be located on your computer’s hard drive, or on a different computer on your local network. This location is usually configured when you install your software. However, your database may also be moved to a new location or different computer if necessary.

The database is typically located in the following location:

            C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL12.MONSOON\MSSQL\DATA

From this location on your hard drive, Monsoon Marketplace manages your data using Microsoft SQL Server. (For more information about supported versions of SQL Server, see System Requirements.)

For more information on customizing your database location, contact Monsoon Support.

Automated Back-ups

Monsoon Marketplace includes a utility that runs automatically—there is no user action needed to create backups.

Backups are saved by default to:

            C:/MonsoonBackups

Weekly Full Back-ups: Monsoon Marketplace creates a complete backup of your database every seven (7) days, calculated from the time that the software was installed.

Daily Differential Back-ups: Monsoon Marketplace runs a differential back-up every day at 4 AM (system time). This differential back-up is a record of all changes made to your database in the previous 24 hours. A differential back-up reduces the amount of drive space required for your back-ups takes less time to process than a full back-up and uses far fewer of your system resources when being created than a full database back-up.

These differential back-ups — when combined with your weekly back-up — supply a complete back-up of your Monsoon Marketplacedata.

Additional Considerations

The backups created by Monsoon Marketplace are saved to your primary computer. These backups can be used for recovering data if your live database becomes corrupt or otherwise compromised. However, to make them available for use if the computer running Monsoon Marketplace becomes damaged or destroyed, you should also save them to a separate location that is offsite or can be moved offsite. (To do this, copy the files in C:/MonsoonBackups to the alternative location.)

An external hard drive, USB thumbdrive, or cloud-based upload service are good offsite storage options.
